The movie, in which alien ships invade LA (apparently the city of choice for alien invasions in 2011, with Battle: Los Angelesalso scheduled for release later that year) seems all to familiar.

Maybe it’s the reboot of V or Independence Day I’m thinking of.  Then again, once you’ve seen a bunch of CGI spaceships hovering menacingly over a city, there’s really no going back is there?

Thor hits the screens next May and has a lot riding on it. Along with Captain America, it will tie in with other franchises The Hulk and Iron Man to form The Avengers, which will be rleased in 2012 and if successful, permanently change how super-hero movies are seen and made.

Fanboys were getting concerned because released photo stills of Thor (even though by their very nature they’re taken out of context), gave the distinct wiff of fromage.  

That’s all about to change with the release of this trailer via  Trailer Addict, which was shown last weekend at Comic-Con in San Diego.  Clearly an origin story, Thor looks like it’s going to deliver the goods (and one smokin’ hot lead in Chris Hemsworth).

The trailer for Zack Snyder’s Sucker Punch packs a whallop, even though I’m not exactly sure what the plot is.  A young woman gets taken to mental institution where she escapes into an un-reality, where she plans to escape and another inmate cryptically tells her they’re dead (shades of LOST maybe?).

Looks like a mish mash of every heavy effect green-screened movie put out in the past few years.  Dragons!  (Lord of the Rings) Warriors! (300) Giant Robots! (Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow) Guns! (Sin City).  Sadly, no sign of dinosaurs or giant monkeys (King Kong).

After the Green Lantern panel featuring stars Ryan Reynolds (Hal Jordan/Green Lantern) and Blake Lively (Carol Ferris) made a splash at Comic-Con over the weekend, teaser posters have made their way on line, which also feature Mark Strong (Sinestro) and Peter Sarsgaard (Hector Hammond).

Love the make-up effects (the little that’s shown) for the two baddies.

Just in time for Comic-Con, Marvel Studios have signed on the actor to take over the role of Bruce Banner (The Hulk), and of course they trotted him out on stage with the rest of the cast that makes up The Avengers last night.

From left to right, Robert Downey Jr as Tony Stark/Iron Man, Clark Gregg as Agent Phil Coulson, Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow, Chris Hemsworth (yum) as Thor, Chris Evans (double yum) as Captain America, Samuel L Jackson as Nick Fury, Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye, and Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner, followed by Director Joss Wheldon and Marvel Studios Kevin Fiege.

I don’t know about you, but when I first saw this I had a nerdgasim.  Apparently, the geeks in the audience (and there were several thousand) went nuts.

Debate is already raging with fanboys (who can be as fussy as old women when it comes to these things) about Mark Ruffalo taking over the role of Bruce Banner.  Personally, I don’t see a problem with it.  Mark’s a very talented actor and is apparently great to work with, which is what the studio was looking for.

With Joss Wheldon (Buffy the Vampire Slayer) on board expect cracking sharp dialogue and a great story.  Can’t wait to see who the big bad is that The Avengers do battle with.

Captain America and Thor will be coming to the screen next summer, and The Avengers is scheduled for a summer 2012 release.

Everyone’s favorite serial killer of killers is back for a fifth season starting in September 26th on Showtime.  The trailer premiered at Comic-Con in San Diego the other day.

“Sins may be forgiven, but conscience is a killer.”  Great tagline.

I haven’t seen season four myself yet, but heard what happened (the perils of being a pop culture and TV junkie).  However, I’ve found that with most things, it’s all about the journey, not the destination.

When I first saw the title for Sharktopus I had to wonder if last summer’s Mega-Shark vs Giant Octopus on Syfy was actually a tale about forbidden love.

Thankfully, the answer to that is no.

Sharktopus is from director Roger Corman, the 21st century version of Ed Wood (Plan 9 From Outer Space).  Known for his grade Z genre films, Corman is the perfect fit for Syfy‘s Original Saturday Night monster movie franchise, which fully embraces his style.

Bad acting?  Check.  Worse dialogue?  Check.  Non-special non-effects?  Double check.  Don’t even get me started on the soundtrack, which sounds like a mash up between one of those beach movies from the 60′s and something from Quentin Tarantino on a bender.

Park your brain and behold the stupdifying awfulness that is Sharktopus.

Is CGI green the “new” black? 

Ryan Reynolds makes it look goooooood on the cover of the new issue of Entertainment Weekly, available tomorrow.

Warner Brothers has a lot riding on next summer’s Green Lantern movie, which sounds like it’s going to be all sorts of awesome (and the possible first real step towards a Justice League movie). 

It’s all part of Comic Con that begins next week in San Diego.  One of these years I’ll have to make the pilgrimage.  It’s Mecca for nerds and geeks like myself.

Hot on the heels of the somewhat reviled but still commercially successful The Last Airbender by director M. Night Shyamalan, comes this trailer from the first release in his new film anthology series, The Night Chronicles, called Devil.

Devil was directed by John Erick Dowdle and his brother Drew (Quarantine), with a screenplay by Brian Nelson based on an idea by M Night Shymalan, who also served as producer.  Got all that?

Could this be the next Paranormal Activity?  There’s something of a post-modern Twilight Zone vibe to it.  Here’s hoping it lives up to it’s hype (early buzz has been good).
