Marvel Studios to Edward Norton “Your a bit of a dick to work with” – UPDATED

OK, they didn’t actually say those words, but between the lines….

Marvel has thrown down the gauntlet regarding it’s upcoming Avengers movie which teams the characters Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, The Hulk, Nick Fury, Black Widow and several others by officially announcing that they won’t be calling on Edward Norton to reprise his role as Bruce Banner.

Norton caused a lot of headaches when he got into a well documented dispute with execs over the script and the movie’s direction.  Long story short: The notoriously difficult Norton refused to promote the film, the movie did OK at the box office, but was far from the huge draw Iron Man did (both were released the same summer).  Norton blamed the studio, the studio blamed him.

Rumour was floating around that Marvel was now going for a lesser known actor due to monetary reasons.  Then last night, the studio released a fairly blunt statement (by Hollywood standards) clarifying their position.

“We have made the decision to not bring Ed Norton back to portray the title role of Bruce Banner in The Avengers. Our decision is definitely not one based on monetary factors, but instead rooted in the need for an actor who embodies the creativity and collaborative spirit of our other talented cast members. The Avengers demands players who thrive working as part of an ensemble, as evidenced by Robert, Chris H, Chris E, Sam, Scarlett, and all of our talented casts. We are looking to announce a name actor who fulfills these requirements, and is passionate about the iconic role in the coming weeks.”

Oh, snap.

No word from Edward Norton or his spokesminions over the jab (honest as it may be).  Of course, people are already lining up to take sides, some saying Marvel is out of line while others are saying this is simply karma.

Wonder what Eric Bana’s doing?  He originated the role in Ang Lee’s boring existential version of The Hulk several years ago, and made a great Bruce Banner.

UPDATE – Norton’s agent has responded to Marvel’s statement and predictably isn’t pleased with what he (and obviously his client) deems as a personal attack, not to mention the lost commission on a potentially huge paycheck.

“This offensive statement from Kevin Feige at Marvel is a purposefully misleading, inappropriate attempt to paint our client in a negative light.  Here are the facts:  two months ago, Kevin called me and said he wanted Edward to reprise the role of Bruce Banner in The Avengers.  He told me it would be his fantasy to bring Edward on stage with the rest of the cast at ComiCon and make it the event of the convention.  When I said that Edward was definitely open to this idea, Kevin was very excited and we agreed that Edward should meet with Joss Whedon to discuss the project.  Edward and Joss had a very good meeting (confirmed by Feige to me) at which Edward said he was enthusiastic at the prospect of being a part of the ensemble cast.  Marvel subsequently made him a financial offer to be in the film and both sides started negotiating in good faith.  This past Wednesday, after several weeks of civil, uncontentious discussions, but before we had come to terms on a deal, a representative from Marvel called to say they had decided to go in another direction with the part.  This seemed to us to be a financial decision but, whatever the case, it is completely their prerogative, and we accepted their decision with no hard feelings.

We know a lot of fans have voiced their public disappointment with this result, but this is no excuse for Feige’s mean spirited, accusatory comments.  Counter to what Kevin implies here, Edward was looking forward to the opportunity to work with Joss and the other actors in the Avengers cast, many of whom are personal friends of his.  Feige’s statement is unprofessional, disingenuous and clearly defamatory.  Mr. Norton talent, tireless work ethic and professional integrity deserve more respect, and so do Marvel’s fans.

Oh, whaaaaaa!

Another problem with Edward Norton is (allegedly) he has to be the only star on the set.  Normally this would be a problem on almost any production, but it becomes an out and out impossibility when dealing with an ensemble cast that includes Robert Downy Jr, Scarlet Johansen and Samuel L. Jackson.

If Eric Bana is unavailable may I suggest Adiran Brody?  As the newly released Predators has just proved, he looks great half naked.

The Twilight Saga gets spoofed in “Vampires Suck”

“>

Long time coming.

You know you’ve hit the big league when Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer, the team behind the so-stupid-they’re-funny Date Movie, Epic Movie, Disaster Movie, and Scary Movie franchise have turned their collective attention to your property.

Should also be intersting to see how the Twi-freaks, who’s obsession also gets spoofed, react to this latest insult (it won’t be pretty).

Having seen The Twilight Saga: Eclipse myself on Thursday (Note: never sit in a chilly theatre for two hours plus when your already battling a cold), I can honestly say that the latest installment would be hard to parody, since it’s so bad it’s almost a parody of itself, if that makes any sense.

However, if anyone’s up to the challenge, it’s Freidberg and Seltzer, who also take shots at current pop culture notables Jersey Shore and Lady Gaga, among others.  Vampires Suck opens next month.

Haters to the left right.

Wonder Woman gets an update

What were they thinking?

As per Deadline Hollywood, one of the best female superheros ever has been given an updated costume for some reason. Tight black leather pants and jacket with boots.  Really?  That’s the best they could come up with??  (Ok, so they altered the bracelets a bit too.)

Years, ago DC pulled the same stunt with Superman, giving him a snazzy black and white outfit.  Notice how the characters not wearing it anymore in the comics?

DC says of the new look, “It reflects her origins in both the outside world and the world of Amazons: tough, elegant…a street-fighter’s look which also incorporates elements of her classic design.”

Apparently, along with the new outfit comes a new timeline, one where Paradise Island gets invaded and Diana is one of the few to escape as a child, the story then picks up some twenty years later with Diana/Wonder Woman hunted and on the run from her enemies.

Cue the countdown for fan backlash with DC abandoning this look to go back to the tried and true look we all grew up with.

I hadn’t heard a thing about this movie until I saw the trailer. You know, it looks just gloriously weird enough to be good.

Syfy presents: Battle of the Mega 80′s Has-Beens

Ok, the cable network isn’t actually calling it that (although they really, really, should).  Syfy has announced that one time mall concert singing sensation Tiffany will be pitted against Debbie Gibson in an upcoming made TV movie, Mega Python vs Gatoroid.  No, I’m not making any of this crap up.

The plot revolves around Gibson playing an animal rights activist advocating the release of tropical snakes into the Everglades, while Tiffany plays a park ranger determined to protect the gator population.  Here I was hoping they’d each be playing the title roles.  Sadness.

Syfy has a hit on it’s hands with it’s Original Saturday Night B-grade mega- monster movies.  Last year Debbie (excuse me Deborah), starred in Mega Shark vs Giant Octopus (it’s ridiculously awesome as it sounds – see trailer at bottom of post below) while Tiffany was in Mega Piranah.

Mega Python vs Gatoroid is scheduled to air on Syfy sometime next year.

More Sookeh!

Here’s some news you can sink your fangs into.

HBO has confirmed that True Blood will be back for a fourth season in the summer of 2011.  Was there ever any doubt with the show’s ratings continue to climb?

Showrunner and creator Alan Ball says “this is the most fun” he’s ever had working on a television series.

If your not watching you should.  It’s like an R rated version of Buffy, with less vamp-fu.

Eclipse behind the scenes sneak peak

“>

Check out his clip about the fight scenes (there’s quite a few of them) for the upcoming third installment of the Twilight Saga: Eclipse.

The film clearly isn’t just from Bella’s POV (unlike the books) and probably stands to be the most accessible (something for everyone) to date.

Apparently, some Twi-freaks have been complaining that the movie focuses too much on action and not enough on the Edward/Bella/Jacob love triangle, without of course having seen anything but the trailers at this point.

Mind-boggling.

Haters to the left.

Good thing Transformers isn’t about acting

Guess that over the top Victoria’s Secret ad she shot with Michael Bay directing a while back was a taste of bigger things to come.

Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, a model with no prior acting experience (aside from standing around in lingerie looking seductive while wind machines blow her hair and explosions go off in the background) has landed the coveted role of  Shia LeBeouf’s out of league love interest in the upcoming Transformers 3.

Rosie replaces Megan Fox, who quit of her own accord or was canned for being either too skinny or too bitchy in her criticisms of Michael Bay, depending on who you want to believe.

Somewhere out there, Heidi Montag is convincing herself that she actually had a shot at the role, and lost it because she hasn’t had enough plastic surgery.

So is Michael Bay on to something with this casting couch choice or is he out of his mind?  We’ll find out July 1, 2011 when the movie comes out.

Lost finale: You got to be kidding me

Six years.  Six freaking years building up to something, anything and this is what we get?

Epic fail.

The series finale of LOST aired last night.  Amid much hype and promises of answers we got a sappy, anti-climatic mess that’s causing a lot of divison amongst fans.

The debates are raging all over the internet with people either having loved it, hated it, or left feeling dissatisfied and cheated somehow.  (I’d mention the smug bastards who are gloating about how they didn’t get sucked in to begin with, but they don’t count).

Guess this is the result of writers painting themselves into a corner with no clear idea (despite their claims to the contrary) of what they were doing.

Apparently, the ratings for the finale were 13 million.  Solid but not spectacular.  As for the two and a half hour running time, a whopping 45 minutes went to commercials.  That’s 45 minutes of my life that I will never, ever, get back.

JJ Abrams and company better deliever on Super 8 next summer, or it’s over between us.
